Essential Oils for Hair Health
I am a huge advocate for using natural substances on our bodies. I personally have always loved Essential Oils and about four months ago I join Young Living. If you’re not familiar with this company they are the purest Essential Oil company in the world. They care anything from oils, to body carry and household cleaning products. Now I am not here to sell you on Young Living [although I will totally help you sign up if you want!] but rather to enlighten you on how beneficial Essential Oils can be when added into your everyday hair care!
What are Essential Oils?
Essential Oils are oils extracted from natural botanicals by use of steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing. Essential Oils have been used for ages and can help support dietary and cosmetic needs. They are hundred percent safe to use around children and animals! I use them in my home daily and I especially love to use them in my facial and hair care routines! There are four Essential Oils I love to recommend to help balance your hair care routine and they include: Lavender, Cedarwood, Tea Tree and Peppermint. They are super simple to add into the products you currently have, just simply add anywhere from 5-20 drops [depending on bottle size, smaller bottle less drops] to your product and shake it up!
Just a quick tip and this is super important, always transfer any products into a glass bottle prior to adding oils. Plastic containers change the composition of the oil and the oils are strong enough to burn right through plastic. So let’s avoid the mess and check out some of my favorite bottles in my Clean Home List on Amazon!
Lavender Essential Oil Benefits
Lavender oil is one of the most commonly used everyday oils for obvious reasons! Lavender has one of the best floral scents and is known for its calming properties.
There are so many benefits to adding this heavenly scent into your Shampoo and Conditioner! For starters, If you are experiencing any hair loss for any reason this can help to increase your hair growth thus making your hair thicker and longer. It also carries antimicrobial properties to help prevent bacteria, fungus and [for you moms out there] it will prevent lice! This is a great one to use on your children daily when that horrible little bug problem goes rampant at school. Last but not least, this calming oil has wonderful effects on any scalp conditions such as psoriasis, dandruff, and other inflammations.
The best mixing ratio for adding this oil into any product is always going to depend on the bottle size. I always recommend adding just a few drops [3-5] to test the waters and see how your body reacts to the oil then you can gradually add more. Now if you are working with larger bottles around 30 oz you can add a bit more, 10-20 drops but don’t exceed 20.
Cedarwood Essential Oil Benefits
Cedarwood Oil is known for it’s very relaxing aroma that most people like to use during their night time routines! When used in facial care it can help maintain healthy looking skin, but in hair care it has even better benefits.
One of the biggest benefits of Cedarwood in hair care is it’s cleansing and moisturizing capabilities! It is also known to help with hair growth, dandruff and dry hair. There was a Medical Study on individuals who suffered from Alopecia where they tested to see if Essential Oils were useful in treating conditions like these. The examiners used a blend of Cedarwood, Lavender and a few other oils. In the “controlled group of 19 people [using this oil blend] they found that 43% of them found showed signs of improvement and hair growth”. They also found this oil, like Lavender, to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits! Bacterias and Fungus are a huge leading cause to hair loss, so using Cedarwood and Lavender regularly will help bring down any inflammation from these two causes thus preventing hair loss.
The mixing ratios are the same as mentioned above! Always start slowly to check for reactions and gradually add more.
Tea Tree Essential Oil Benefits
Tea Tree Oil, aside from Lavender, is something I have on hand at all times! This oil has major benefits for the body but can be extremely potent, so make sure to use this with caution, or mix with any carrier oil found on my Amazon link above.
One of the biggest benefits of Tea Tree Oil is it’s cleansing properties! This is one of my favorites to add into skin care to help combat acne and shrink the pores. If you suffer from acne on your scalp, this will also help to treat this! It’s also great to combat any scalp conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, or itchy scalp. Combine this with lavender for a super relaxing scent in your shower or bath!
Peppermint Essential Oil Benefits
Peppermint Oil is a super popular scent that you cannot miss! It’s known for its tingling sensations, cooling properties, digestive support and can create a stimulated atmosphere. What most don’t know is that Peppermint Oil is one of the best oils for your scalp health!
Have you ever used a hair product that contained Peppermint Oil in it and felt that crazy minty and tingly feeling on your scalp? This is not a bad thing [although some don’t enjoy it] because it’s actually stimulating your scalp and increasing the blood flow! This increased blood flow helps the nutrients reach your hair follicles thus increasing your hair growth and scalp health. This is a great one to pair with any of the above oils for additional benefits!
Peppermint oil is also known to be very potent and can cause skin irritations, so please make sure to to test this slowly and always add a carrier oil if using it directly on the skin. This oil can be added into your shampoo or used as a massage oil for your scalp. You can find all the recipes and mixing ratios for massage oils here.
In Conclusion…
I’ve written a few blogs over the last few weeks that stressed the importance of using good quality hair products and now that you have purchased these wonderful products it’s time to upgrade them just a little more! Adding in any of these Essential Oils mentioned above will help to take your daily shampoo and solutions to your hair concerns to the next level. Plus who doesn’t love a great spa like experience in the shower every morning! Now go get to oiling!
